Fur traders first arrived in Vernon in 1811 and the first development was along Swan Lake, a lake just north of Vernon. The town was named after Forbes George Vernon, a British Army Lieutenant who was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. Fur and gold brought settlers to the town, and by the early 1900s Vernon was recognized as the economic hub of the Okanagan.
