Fur traders first arrived in Vernon in 1811 and the first development was along Swan Lake, a lake just north of Vernon.  The town was named after Forbes George Vernon, a British Army Lieutenant who was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. Fur and gold brought settlers to the town, and by the early 1900s Vernon was recognized  as the economic hub of the Okanagan.

Prime Vernon Real Estate areas like East Hill and Mission Hill grew up at this time in the expanding town, and the town continued to grow due when a military base was set up in the area. During both World Wars, Vernon was used as a training ground for Canadian troops.

Getting Around

Highway 97, Highway 97A and Highway 6 all run through Vernon. The local transit, including the handyDART public bus service, is operated by Vernon Regional Transit, through BC Transit. Greyhound Canada also serves Vernon.
